I am the aforementioned cousin of the disgruntled squawker. I did not realize that he held such deep seeded issues of being bullied. I guess a couple of Old Milwaukee’s next time we are at the Steamboat will smooth that over.
But I digress; I am here to complain about Iowa Football. Growing up in Iowa, the Hawkeye’s are it. There are no professional sports, the Hawkeyes are it and they used to deliver in both football and basketball. Nowadays, I expect them to lose.
Before Joe Tiller was crowned the most innovative coach in the Big Ten (debatively) there was a Texan who resided in Iowa City, Iowa who was considered that, John Hayden Fry. A gambling play caller who knew that sometimes you throw on 1st down. A coach that realized that 18-23 year old men can’t give you the same effort week in and week out and adjusted his game plan to fit the ups and downs of the season and week to week conditions. A coach that was courted by other teams such as USC but remained true blue to his beloved Hawkeyes. While he was not without his faults Hayden Fry always made Iowa Football exciting and you always thought that we might have a chance, even when we did not always have the horses because he was on the sidelines.
Now the Iowa fan base is faced with one of the most boring and predictable game plans that makes even the Kansas City Chiefs cringe. Even Pam Ward, one of my cousin’s favorite play by play announcers can predict what play we will run. The team this year is loaded with talent, the line is moving people around, Shonne Greene is ½ Christian Okoye, ½ Barry Sanders and with Rick Stanzi, DJK, Andy Brodell , Brandon Myers and Tony Moeaki we have a competent quarterback with a wonderful set of receivers that have proven they can catch the ball when it is not thrown at 110 mph.
The defense is as stout as it has been for awhile also King, Kroul, Clayborne and Ballard are animals. Edds is bringing back memories of the Greenway/ Hodge years. Tyler Sash is making a name for himself in the backfield. But a quarterback that is on and gets any kind of protection can shred us to bits especially once we get tired. How many of you cringe on 2nd or 3rd and 20 knowing it will be given up in the soft zone. Even Ron Zook has finally figured us out.
I believe I saw that we have not won in East Lansing since the Chuck Long – Statue of Liberty play in 1985. That took a ballsy call by Coach Fry. We have the talent to beat Michigan State but we don’t have the innovation and in game coaching competence to overcome Sparty. Michigan State 21 Iowa 17.
